Disabled Vehicles with Ramps

It is a common practise for wheelchair accessible disabled vehicles Nuneaton to come fitted with ramps. This is known to be the most common method to get in and out of a WAV. Before buying one, it is helpful to know about the way a ramp functions. A ramp functions in two ways. The customary method is manual. The WAV user should unfold the ramp physically from the rear end of the vehicle. This needs a lot of practise and attention although automatic ramps are easy to handle and are an option to make this easier.. These are available with special buttons to start the function. Hence, one can fold and unfold the ramp with the touch of a button. The only problem with an automatic ramp is its cost as they usually cost more than a manual ramp.

WAVs with Lifts

These are common with larger wheelchair accessible vehicles. The lifts facilitate the carer to push a wheelchair up the ramp and carry it inside the vehicle. This is a more expensive option and demands annual service.

A Few Factors to Consider

• An electric winch (a kind of strap attached to wheel chair) is useful to facilitate pushing of wheelchair up the ramp.

• Decide on the parking space of the vehicle. Ample space is necessary for lift or ramp and also to ensure easy manoeuvring and access to the disabled vehicle.

• Usually ramps and lifts are fitted at the backside of the wheelchair accessible vehicle. There are also some vehicles that allow side access. The choice will depend on the model and size you decide to buy and your convenience.
